KCI Shows Commitment to Product Education by Accreditation through Nursing Skills Competency Program

SAN ANTONIO—March 1, 2010—(NYSE:KCI) today announced that the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) has granted national accreditation for the Foundational Competency Program on KCI V.A.C.® Therapy. KCI is the first commercial entity to develop and receive accreditation for a product-focused nursing skills competency program.

The KCI Accredited Education program has been in existence for 28 years, offering certificates for 12 programs that nurses may take for continuing education credit. In 2009, the program awarded more than 30,000 certificates.

ANCC, the largest and most prestigious nurse credentialing organization in the world, defines the standards for high performance in continuing nursing education and measures adherence to those standards. The ANCC launched the Nursing Skills Competency Program (NCSP) in 2007, making it the first program to measure nurses against the same standard of care and skills nationwide. KCI's participation in the NCSP demonstrates the company's commitment to educating clinicians on the safe and appropriate use of its products.

"As the first commercial entity to be recognized by the ANCC, we have the opportunity to contribute to the NSCP's design by bridging the academic component with practical application" said Jana Stewart, RN, BSN, WOCN, senior manager, KCI Accredited Education. "This landmark program, which establishes the benchmark for medical device companies, will lead to an improved level of clinical performance that is a key focus of today's regulatory environment, and clearly underscores KCI's mission of putting patients first."

The ANCC has recognized the Foundational Competency Program on KCI V.A.C.® Therapy as "a very good – and very needed – foundation for development of more specialized skills." By meeting the rigorous educational design standards and review by two expert ANCC panels, this national status will further differentiate KCI's educational programming from that of competitors and continue to validate the company's leading-edge approach to outcomes. The Foundational Competency Program certificate on KCI V.A.C.® Therapy is portable and biennially renewable.

While Continuing Nursing Education programs exclude product-specific focus and limit commercial involvement, ANCC's groundbreaking NSCP addresses product-specific safety and application training involving a wide variety of healthcare and health-related organizations, including manufacturers or distributers of commercial healthcare products.

The nationally accredited certificate of competency will provide a tool for employers and individual nurses to validate nursing skills. By responding to the current healthcare environment's initiatives to implement measures to provide safe nursing practice, KCI and ANCC anticipate the courses will further strengthen physician, regulatory, payer and consumer confidence in product application.
